New York, N.Y.—The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and STX has been voluntarily recalled STX Shield throat protectors for laceration hazards they they pose to consumers. The CPSC announced the nationwide product recall on February 26, 2014.

The throat protectors were recalled after it was discovered that they could crack or break during use if they are hit by lacrosse ball, which poses a laceration hazard to the consumer.

“This recall involves the STX Shield throat protector. The throat protector is black and has the letters ‘STX’ engraved on the outer surface of the protector. It has straps attached by silver screws on each side and bottom of the protector to attach it to a lacrosse goalie’s helmet below the helmet’s chin guard.” the CPSC reports.

Consumers are advised to return the throat protector to STX for a full refund. There has been one report of a throat protector cracking, which resulted in bruising and lacerations to the victim’s neck.
